Asinta Business Etiquette Insight: Costa Rica

September 28, 2016:

Looking to set up a new business in Costa Rica? Our business etiquette insights can help establish good relations with your Costa Rican colleagues:

a) Titles are considered very important in business circles and it is usual to address a person by his title only, e.g. Doctor, Professor etc. If your business associate does not have a professional title, then it is common practice to call a gentleman Don (plus his first name) or a lady Dona (plus her first name). This is considered a sign of courtesy and should always be used unless requested otherwise by the person you are addressing.

b) Relationships are a key element in business negotiations and are often about who you know or are connected to so try and establish good connections with key colleagues. Although an increasing number of Costa Ricans are bilingual, a good knowledge of Spanish will be viewed very positively. Make sure you have your business cards, proposals or other such material printed in both English and Spanish.

c) Small talk is part of any business conversation. Take your time and do not bring up any business-related topics before your business colleague does otherwise you will be seen as rude or rash. If you rush straight to the actual point or show any signs of impatience, you will not be seen in a good light! Topics can cover a wide range but talking about family, nature, food, or soccer (the nation’s favorite pastime) will stand you in very good stead.
