Singapore: Asinta Business Etiquette Insight

Looking to set up a new business in Singapore? Our business etiquette insights can help establish good relations with your Singaporean colleagues:

a) People in Singapore are generally open and cosmopolitan in their outlook but it is important to adapt to their business culture, which calls for courtesy and respect at all times. When making introductions for the first time or in formal meetings, always use the person’s title and family name followed by his personal name, if he has a Chinese name. People with Western names are treated as normal, i.e. given name before family name.

b) Meeting with business colleagues should start with a soft handshake followed by the exchange of business cards. This is an important ritual which must be treated with respect, ideally using both hands to give and receive the card. Place the card in front of you where you will be sitting and never casually put it away or write on it – this will be construed as very disrespectful!

c) Punctuality is considered very important. If you are going to be more than a few minutes late, then make sure you call to inform your colleagues. Singaporeans tend to get right down to business in meetings – they are fast-paced and make decisions quickly. Always talk straight and get right to the point with them and make sure you deliver on any promises you make!
