India: Compliance: India’s Data Protection Bill to Crystalize in 2020India’s Data Protection Bill encompasses data privacy, security and sovereignty, some of the most keenly debated topics the world over.

In light of the EU’s GDPR, Indian lawmakers initiated discussions about India’s regulatory architecture for data protection. Elaborate and exhaustive pre-legislation exercises took place last year, involving consultations and deliberations with many stakeholders. The Government finally moved the Personal Data Protection Bill in Parliament on December 11, 2019. The bill was referred to a Parliamentary Standing Committee and is expected to take final shape in the budget session of Parliament in February 2020.
